Rumors circulated of Ronaldo wanting
to leave Manchester United for Real Madrid, which made United to file a
tampering complaint with FIFA complaining about Madrid wanting to steal away
their player, however, FIFA did nothing about it. The then FIFA president, Sepp
Blatter rather said any player that wants to leave a club should be allowed to;
else, it becomes ‘modern slavery’. Though Ronaldo supported Blatter’s claims,
he still stayed at United for another year.
Strive to win more
Just ahead of the 2008-09 season, particularly on July 7,
Ronaldo had an ankle surgery which made him miss action for 10 weeks. On getting back, Ronaldo scored his 100th
goal for United in all competitions with the first coming from two free kicks
against Stoke in a rout which ended 5-0 on 15 November; and this made him to
have scored against all the 19 opponents in the Premier League. In 2008,
Ronaldo helped United win the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, by assisting in the
final winning goal against Liga de Quito which made him win the Silver Ball. To
add to Ronaldo’s success, he became the first Ballon d’Or winner for United
since George Best did in 1968 and also the first Premier League player to be
awarded the FIFA World Player of the Year.

Further, Ronaldo scored the
match-winning goal in a second leg match against Porto from 40-yard and this
made him win the inaugural FIFA Puskas Award, which was awarded by FIFA in
recognizing the best goal of the year; Ronaldo later claimed the goal to be the
best he has ever scored. United
was then able to make it to the final but Ronaldo wasn’t active in the final
match at Rome against Barca where they lost 2-0. At the end of Ronaldo’s sojourn in England, it all came with nine
trophies, with United winning a third successive Premier League.
Leave before you are replaced
Ronaldo ended his campaign with 26 goals, 16 goals lesser
than the previous season. Ronaldo’s last
goal for Manchester United came from a fabulous free kick in a Manchester derby
which was at Old Trafford on 10 May, 2009.
Ronaldo’s sojourn at Real Madrid
Before the start of the 2009-10 season, Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid for a world record transfer fee just at
the time. A whooping £80 million (€94 million) was used to
move Ronaldo from Manchester United to Real Madrid (remember he was first
signed for £12.24
million and his worth has grown that much with time. Always know, modern
medicine may not be enough to heal all injuries, but time is the ultimate
factor to heal all wounds. If only your patience would be enough, if only you
could try harder, if only you could be consistent, that particular thing will
still be worthwhile, it would only take time).
The contract which runs into 2015
involves paying Ronaldo €11 million per year and a buy-out clause of €1 billion

Never too early to break records
During Ronaldo’s presentation at
Santiago Bernabeu, there was another record to break for him; he surpassed the
25-year record of 75,000 fans who graced the coming of Diego Maradona to Napoli;
there were more than 80,000 fans that attended Ronaldo’s presentation. Raul was known to wear the number
7 jersey for Madrid as a captain and as a player, same number Ronaldo had worn
at Manchester United, he was instead given the number 9 jersey at Madrid and
was presented to him by former Madrid player, Alfred Di Stefano.
On 29 August 2009, Ronaldo made his
debut for Madrid in a match against Depotivo La Coruna where he scored a
penalty kick in a 3-2 win. Ronaldo also scored in his first four league fixtures
for Madrid and therefore became the first Madrid player to do so. In the Champions League, Ronaldo’s
first two goals for Madrid came from free kicks in a match against Zurich.
However, his blistering performance would suffer a deep blow when he suffered
an ankle injury that left him out of the pitch for seven weeks.

Ronaldo came a week after the injury
to receive his first red card in a club match against Almeria. Unfortunately,
just at the mid of the season, Ronaldo was second to Lionel Messi in the battle
for the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year. Ronaldo was able to
finish his first season at Madrid with 33 goals in all competitions, which
includes a hat-trick from a 4-1 win against Mallorca in May 2010, his first in
La Liga; Ronaldo ended trophyless in his first season at real Madrid.
Go all out for what you want
When Raul left Real Madrid just
before the 2010-11 season, Ronaldo was given the number 7 shirt and he was able
to join the race for the Ballon d’Or when he scored a daunting four goals in a
match, which was his first in his career in a 6-1 rout against Racing Santander
on October 23. He was more prolific in that month when he scored in six
consecutive matches, where three came from La Liga, one from the Champions
League and two from the national team, Portugal which was the highest number of
goals he has ever scored in a month. He further scored hat-tricks against
Athletic Bilbao, Villareal, Malaga and Levante but failed to even join the best
three on the podium for the Ballon d’Or award at the end of 2010.
Consistency pays
Ronaldo’s first trophy in Spain came
from a penalty in the return league game of the Copa del Rey final in the 103rd
minute. In the following weeks, Ronaldo heaped a bulk of goals on his
opponents; four on Sevilla, free-kick brace against Villareal, which took his
goal tally to 38. This was enough to match Telmo Zarra and Hugo Sanchez record
for most goals in a season. The two goals scored at the tail of the season
(last match) took his goals to 40 and this made Ronaldo the first player to
score 40 goals in a season in La Liga...to be continued
