‘Success has many friends and failure is an orphan’ so they say. According to Donald Trump, ‘In the end, you will not be measured by how much you undertake but by what you finally accomplish’. Nobody wants to associate with failure. It’s a norm to call someone doing well for himself your blood, brother, cousin or whatever name you can call it despite the person not knowing if you existed. Similarly, when you do well in your endeavors, or you are among the few that are successful in their respective niche, those that have never met you start to describe to people around them how you related. It is not their fault or your fault, everyone just feel disgusted with the sound of failure.

According to T. S. Eliot, ‘Success is relative; It is what we can make of the mess we have made of things’. Almost everyone has gone the wrong path on the journey of life. We have all made mistakes and wish we could rewind the hands of time to correct our asininity. Though it may not be possible, learning the lesson associated with it is the most important. From previous stories of the great men, they have recanted the setbacks they had and advised young men and women not to tread a similar path so they can make up for the time. We tend to see those that made it when they were close to their grave and we also know about those that made it very early in life.

In this article, we would check on the recommendations of great men on the most important things to pay attention to in the journey of Life. Based on his life and personal experiences, he gave recommendations on how best not to waste time while finding one’s feet and we will quickly look at these bullets;

#1 Focus

From the precious words of Andrew Carnegie, ‘Concentrate your energy, thought and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged...'Don't put all your eggs in one basket' is all wrong. I tell you 'put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.' Exactly! Whatever your hand finds to do, do it well. Focus clearly on what you want and engage in it. you can’t divert attention and get outright success. You can’t love your work and have penchant for laziness. What is worth doing is worth doing well. If you focused, and it didn’t work out, you learn the lesson, if it works, it becomes a success. According to an African proverb, ‘He who paddles two canoes, sinks’.

#2 Improve yourself

‘Chance favors only the prepared mind’ – Louis Pasteur. Aside focusing and getting something to do, make sure you are learning, gaining and improving your daily lives and activity. Read books, watch tutorial videos, seek for advice, have those you look up to, follow the path of those that have passed through the same journey you are in. He who seeks for path doesn’t get lost. Make sure there is one particular thing you add to yourself each day, either academically or professionally. You can’t be in a spot and crave for success. Always make sure a day never passes without you having a testimony of what you just learnt. ‘I’m not an educator…I’m a learner’ – Bill Gates.

#3 Don’t chase money

‘The world stands on three things: money, money and money’ according to a Yiddish proverb. Everybody loves money and wants money. Money makes the world go round. Money is good, especially in business where it serves as capital. One of the most important advice by the world richest including Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Nicola Tesla, and Jack Ma is ‘Never chase money when doing business’. Truly everyone needs money; however, the money will come but don’t fix your eye on it. 

You ignore things you can’t control. The tendency of you quitting that business is very high when you expect money and it didn’t come quick. Frustration sets in and you start to think of how much you have invested. Jack Ma said, ‘In the first three years of starting Alibaba, I didn’t make $1’. And some have not even used six months, just because the return on investment (ROI) does not correspond to the capital invested, they call it quit and look for another business.

The moment you forget the money and believe it will surely come later, the better. ‘Money is used to call money’.

#4 Be happy

‘You have your own company, your own temperature control, your own music—and don't have to put up with dreadful human beings sitting alongside you’ - Steven Norris. Everybody loves comfort, everyone wants to be alone. Though being at the comfort zone may be dangerous; leads to stagnancy and make progress difficult. However, whatever level you find yourself at every point in your life, one should be happy. You have to be free and happy with yourself. There is a stage every man must be at every part of his life.

As the days count and the years roll, change is the only constant thing. You must be happy with where you are while your eyes are fixed at where you are aiming for. Never regret your past, just learn the lessons. Nobody should be your source of joy, nobody should hold your happiness at ransom, you must be your own source of joy and happiness. At least, you are not where you used to be. ‘Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning’ – Bible.

#5 Laugh at everything

According to Jean de La Bruyère, ‘One must laugh before one is happy, or one may die without ever laughing at all’. People offend us every day, we offend people also. Life rolls like a ball, we keep meeting at every point like water, what is then the essence of not forgiving your fellow who offended you. What would your anger and unforgiveness accomplish when you are through?

The moment you start to ignore people that offend you, those that break your heart, those you expected so much and hardly got anything, the better for you. Forgiving them and laughing at their ignorance and stupidity actually makes you more healthy, peaceful and happy. Business partners disappoint, they come up with excuses when it is time to pay their dues, fighting them doesn’t solve the problem, laughing at it and making ways or creating solutions is the way out. You can’t be angry at everyone, but it is possible to be happy at everyone. You owe nobody anything, don’t let people drive you crazy and make you do nasty things because you want to be angry. ‘Just laugh at it and let it go.
